High School
“What the human being sees, what is poured into his environment, becomes a force in him. In accordance with it, he forms himself.” —Rudolf Steiner
High academic standards of writing, critical thinking, and independent research help students acquire the skills and the knowledge needed to succeed in post-secondary education and in life. Summerfield Waldorf High School cultivates a curriculum that inspires students to be active in their own learning – to ultimately understand how to take initiative and educate themselves. Students conduct their own science experiments, write their own notes by hand, summarize lessons in their own course books at the end of each course block, present lessons to one another, and engage in group work and seminar-style conversations in every class. Faculty support student’s initiative to create clubs, volunteer programs, campus projects, and much, much more. Each day is filled with content that demonstrates the connectivity and collaboration of all life.
With a 6:1 student to faculty ratio, and 30 years of educating adolescents, Summerfield has seen that a strong, engaged social fabric woven together with a rigorous curriculum provides that greatest combination for success in life. At Summerfield, students engage in a comprehensive study of a variety of disciplines, including science, math, humanities, foreign language, music, drama and the arts. While the four years of high school together form an integrated whole, the curriculum of each grade is tailored to address key stages in adolescent and post-adolescent development. The content of the courses focuses on giving students an increasingly in-depth understanding of the subject at hand and provides them a context to work with the awakening questions of the emerging self.
Students spending 4 years at Summerfield will not just enjoy a rich curriculum, but a rich host of additional opportunities such as Open Week, Mentoring, Athletics, Choir, Drama, Orchestra, Blacksmithing, Pottery and so much more. Our campus is a vibrant hub of activity where ideas, interests, relationships and connections are constantly forming and refining.
