High School Math & Science Teacher
Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm is looking for a teacher with a broad imagination for teaching math and science phenomenologically: guiding students to insight through lived encounters with the real world rather than teaching rote concepts. The science curriculum, which covers Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science, builds on itself over the four grades, in accordance with the development of thinking and consciousness of the high school students by age. Science and Math teachers work collaboratively to bring the subject they are most skilled in teaching. Math tracks span Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry and Calculus and require the curiosity and creativity to work with students of varying abilities simultaneously. Math locks may include 10th grade Sacred Geometry and Conic Sections, and 11th grade Projective Geometry as well as 8th grade Platonic Solids. As many of these classes are unique to Waldorf schools, the ideal candidate would have Waldorf experience, and a willingness to be trained in Waldorf pedagogy is a requirement.
The Math and Science department is made up of several faculty members with different concentrations, most of whom share the Math curriculum. The faculty and staff at Summerfield have a commitment to faculty/staff-led governance so that we act in full freedom toward forming a culture of initiative and mutual support. Each of us (faculty, students, and staff) supports and attends to this culture in unique ways both personally and formally. This may include working on a governance team or committee, being a co-advisor for a class, or mentoring a group of mixed-age students. At Summerfield, we teach 275 students aged 3-18 on a 38-acre campus which includes a Biodynamic® farm, nature preserve, circus tent and an Art/Tech facility. We are asking big questions and seeking a colleague who is inspired to join us collaboratively in this process.
Please email your letter of intention, along with a resume, to Michelle Bovard, HR Manager at: michelle@summerfieldwaldorf.org. Please also include three references (with phone numbers), at least two of whom have seen you teach.
Employment Details: This is a full time exempt position. The current salary is $59,000-$70,000 depending on years of experience. We offer an excellent benefits package.
